Abstract

"Dairying is the most important subsidiary income in Wayanad District and the sector offers immense livelihood support to rural folk, especially agriculture laborers, small and marginal farmers, women, scheduled tribes etc. It plays a vital role in the survival of the farmers from the agriculture crisis. A combination of socio-economic and geographic factors like price fall, crop failures, adverse terms of trade, improved standard of living compulsions and indebtedness, climate change etc contributed in generating agricultural crisis in Wayanad. The poor farmers were not getting financial assistance from banks and financial institutions, to fulfill their economic needs. Amidst these adverse conditions the milk production in Wayanad district is more than 575 lakh liters in 2013-14. Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) are found to be playing a major role in boosting microfinance amongst clients, where formal banking system had rarely been able to provide credit. The primary focus of the paper is on the role and performance of JLGs to uplift dairy farming in Wayanad district of Kerala."
